Voir, the French verb for to see, is one of the most important verbs in the language, so it’s vital to know how to conjugate it properly. Since voir is an irregular verb, several of its conjugations need to be learned outright. In this post we’ll go over every voir conjugation so you have a full reference to this important verb.

Voir and its derivatives
Voir is considered a third-group verb, since many of its conjugations don’t follow the pattern of regular -er or -ir verbs. Nonetheless, several other verbs have near-identical conjugation patterns.
Only two other verbs follow the exact same conjugations of voir: entrevoir and revoir. Prévoir comes very close, but differs in two tenses. Likewise, the verbs pourvoir, dépourvoir, and repourvoir are also conjugated similarly, but have differences in four tenses. We’ll mention the key differences for each of these verbs when we cover those tenses, providing parallel conjugation charts for these verbs.
On the other hand, savoir, devoir, and pouvoir are conjugated differently enough that, despite their ‑voir endings, we can’t consider them to be derivatives of the verb voir. The same can be said for the group of verbs ending in ‑ecevoir: recevoir, apercevoir, concevoir, décevoir, entrapercevoir, and percevoir. We won’t consider the conjugations of these other third-group verbs here.

- voir – to see
- revoir – to see again
- entrevoir – to catch a glimpse
- prévoir – to expect, to foresee, to plan
- pourvoir – to provide
- dépourvoir – to deprive

Voir: Impersonal forms
Before we get into our conjugations, let’s just cover the impersonal forms of voir. We’ve seen the infinitif already, and we’ll see the participe in all of the compound tenses later on. The other voir derivitaves we mentioned above all follow these same forms.

In the compound tenses, voir takes the auxiliary verb avoir. The same generally goes for the other voir derivatives that we’re considering in this post. The main exception is dépourvoir, which is often used in the reflexive form, in which case it takes the auxiliary verb être.
- J’ai vu le même spectacle trois fois de suite. – I saw the same show three times in a row.
- Je me suis dépourvu de mon temps. – I was deprived of my time.
Voir conjugation: Indicative mood
We’ll start with the four simple tenses in l’indicatif: le présent, l’imparfait, le passé simple, and le futur simple. Then we’ll see the four compound tenses: le passé composé, le plus-que-parfait, le passé antérieur, and le futur antérieur.

Note the ‑yi‑ in the nous and vous imparfait voir conjugations. These are often mistakenly omitted by native speakers since the pronunciation is essentially identical to the présent tense we saw above.

The passé simple stem of pourvoir, dépourvoir, and repourvoir takes ‑u‑ instead of ‑i‑ as we saw above for voir.

Note that unlike the other simple indicative tenses of voir, the je conjugation is different from the tu form. Also keep in mind that these forms have a double ‑rr‑ in the middle: the first r is part of the irregular stem ver‑, while the second r is part of each futur simple ending.

Prévoir and pourvoir conjugation: futur simple
The futur simple conjugations follow the regular pattern for prévoir, pourvoir, dépourvoir, and repourvoir, based on the infinitive rather than an irregular stem. Unlike the pattern we saw with the voir future conjugation, these verbs just have a single ‑r‑ in these conjugations.

Voir and its derivatives entrevoir and revoir are irregular in the conditionnel présent, with the same ver‑ stem we saw in the futur simple and the resulting double ‑rr‑ in the middle.
Our other verbs prévoir, pourvoir, dépourvoir, and repourvoir, on the other hand, follow a regular pattern based on the infinitive. We’ll show these prévoir and pourvoir conjugations in their own table below.

Now we’re ready to cover the subjunctive voir conjugations. We’ll start with the two subjunctive tenses that are actually used, le subjonctif présent and le subjonctif passé. Then we’ll cover the two archaic subjunctive tenses, l’imparfait du subjonctif and le plus-que-parfait du subjonctif.
For the other verbs we’re considering here, the only differences we’ll see with our voir subjunctive conjugation is in l’imparfait du subjonctif for pourvoir and its derivatives. We’ll show that conjugation chart on its own below.
